It was 2nd sem of AY 1995-1996 when I joined the Society of Math Majors (SMM) in UPLB. If my memory serves me right, I became an official member on March 8, 1996 with Aimee Roque and John Mark Uychongco as my batchmates. We were named as batch “Circle of Life”. Well, just for the lack of time and effort (I guess J) to come up with a more appropriate name that will represent us and our relation to mathematics as math majors. It was timely, too since it was the theme song of the movie the Lion King that was very popular at that time.
My involvement in SMM became the key to a new me. The following year, 1997, I was elected as the Vice-Chairperson, then as a Juror (1998) and then as Chairperson (1999). I should say, my commitment to SMM has helped me develop my leadership competencies and a sense of direction. It is also through my beloved SMM where I found lifelong friends and loved ones. Let me say it again, loved ones. Yes, SMM is where my now husband has found me. SMM is also one of the reasons why I always feel connected to my alma matter, UPLB.
August 9, 2009 marked the 20th year of SMM’s existence where me and my husband, Shem, have volunteered to make this celebration happen. I am hoping that in the next years to come, SMM will grow more. And more members, both young and old, will gather and celebrate our organization’s birthday.
Long live SMM!
